Description: The future Whittaker Place is a three story, 64,484.13 square feet building in Newport News, VA. Previously a hospital, it was built and designed by black doctors and architects, and it was the only place black residents could get medical treatment in their community besides a local jail. It’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. The building will be redeveloped into 69 apartment units. The inside will consist of 67 apartments, with 42 one-bedroom units, 14 studios and 11 two-bedroom units.
